The Minister of Environment and Waters - Neno Dimov, the mayor of Sandanski municipality - Kiril Kotev and the mayors of the municipalities of Kresna and Strumyani signed a contract for the design and construction of two waste treatment installations.
Under the project will be built a composting plant for separately collected green and biodegradable waste with a capacity of 2623 tons per year and an installation for preliminary treatment of mixed collected waste with an annual capacity of 10 430 tons.
"This is an extremely important project for the Municipality of Sandanski, with which we will fulfill the European commitments," said Kiril Kotev and thanked the Ministry of Environment and Waters and the Operative Programme “Environment” for the good cooperation.
"The implementation of the project will help to achieve the national targets set in the legislation and in the National Waste Management Plan 2014-2020," said Minister Dimov. The target is to limit the amount of biodegradable waste to 35% by 2020. By the end of 2020, the share of recycled household waste should increase to at least 50%, Minister Dimov added . The facilities will be located in the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Sandanski and will cover the three municipalities of Sandanski, Kresna and Strumyani. The composting installation will serve over 43,000 inhabitants and the pre-treatment installation will process the waste of over 47,000 inhabitants. The total amount of the investment is over 9.3 million BGN. The financial support amounting to more than BGN 7 million is provided by Operative Programme "Environment” 2014-2020.
